NATO’s transformation

Dear Visitors,

Thanks again for your continuing participation!

As you know, our online discussions follow the themes of the Seminars held by NATO’s Group of Experts on the developing Strategic Concept. The fourth such Seminar will take place on 23 February, in Washington, DC. Hosted by Supreme Allied Command Transformation and the US National Defense University, the subject of the Seminar will be the Alliance’s transformation of its structure, forces, and capabilities.

Accordingly, our next topic for discussions is, “What changes in structures, forces and capabilities are required for NATO’s transformation into an Alliance that can deal successfully with 21st century challenges?”

Please share your thoughts, concerns or questions. We will try to respond to your ideas and summarize the discussion with another live video session.

As background, please consider reading the most recent two-part edition of NATO Review, available at www.nato.int/review. The edition examined issues related to the new Strategic Concept, the Comprehensive Approach and NATO’s transformation.

Let us know what you think!

The Future of NATO’s Partnerships

Dear Visitors,

We appreciate your active participation in the Forum and your interest in our live video sessions. To continue this process, we are announcing the next round of our online discussions.

We will keep the format of thematic discussions related to the key Strategic Concept seminars. The next such seminar – which will take place in Norway in January – will examine NATO’s evolving partnerships.

Consequently, our next topic for the online discussion is “The Future of NATO’s partnerships”.  The questions we hope to answer include:

  • How NATO can better connect with other international and regional players – states, international and regional organisations as well as non-governmental ones?
  • What lessons learned can be drawn from already existing political and military cooperation with partners?

Please share your thoughts, concerns or questions on any aspect related to NATO’s cooperation with the outside world. We will try to respond to your ideas and summarize the discussion again with another live video session in December.

As food for thought, please consider reading our NATO A-Z page on the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Programme as well as one on the Alliance’s partnerhsip with non-NATO countries.

Let us know what you think!

Second live video session on “NATO’s Engagement in an Era of Globalisation”

Dear contributors,

Your interest made our first live video question-and-answer session on NATO’s core tasks a success. We also appreciate your participation in our online forum discussion of the political dimension of NATO operations.

Upcoming live video sessions will echo the themes of Strategic Concept seminars. The next seminar, to take place in Brdo, Slovenia on 13 November, is entitled “NATO’s Engagement in an Era of Globalisation.” Accordingly, our next live video question-and-answer session, scheduled for 12 November at 16:00 CET, will examine a number of related issues, including:

  • incorporating the lessons of current operations into future strategy;
  • dealing with evolving threats; and
  • facilitating the success of the Comprehensive Approach.

Please submit your questions by leaving a reply below. We will make every effort to pose your questions to our panel participants. If time permits, we will also raise follow-up questions that we receive during the live video session. Do not hesitate to submit your questions well in advance of the event.

Political dimension of NATO operations

Dear Visitors,

Thank you for participating in the discussion on NATO’s core tasks. We would now like to steer the discussion towards the second theme: The political dimension of NATO’s operations.

What should NATO’s operations look like in the future?
How should NATO make decisions on its operations?
How should it work with other international organizations?
How can it define common strategies, and improve strategic communication?

The topic will be running for approximately two weeks, until the third discussion theme will be announced.

For now, please tailor your contributions towards this topic. It will help us in feeding your input into the expert deliberations on the new Strategic Concept.

We are keen to hear your thoughts and ideas on this new theme.
